A Few Facts About Saturn

The Saturn Corporation was established in January of 1985 and officially discontinued in 2010. Although it was a subsidiary of General Motors, Saturn operated somewhat independently of its parent company; with its own assembly plant, separate and unique models and its own retailer network.

It took over five years for Saturn to produce its first vehicle, as the company was formed in the beginning of 1985 and the first car was driven off the assembly line in July of 1990. The concept behind Saturn is described in its marketing, “a different kind of car company.” Initially the thought was that it would create competition for the successful Japanese imports.

This somewhat backfired as Saturn production cost more than the Japanese imports, sales never met the projected targets and due to 41% of Saturn buyers having already been GM owners/buyers and it eating $5 billion from other car projects, there was resentment and discord for the project within its parent company.

In 1997, Saturn became the first GM vehicle produced in North America to have both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive vehicles built on the same assembly line. In 2008 GM announced their desire to sell the Saturn brand as a means of preservation during financial hardship and government bailouts, unfortunately the much-hyped sale to Penske Automotive Group fell through the following year.

Saturn offered two sub-lines toward the end of its production lifespan, Red Line vehicles are performance oriented while Green Line cars are more environmentally friendly, mild hybrids.

One of its individual features, Saturn did not use the same ignition keys and switches as other GM vehicles. Now that dealerships are closed, replacement keys are nearly impossible to find.
