A Few Facts About Kia

Kia Motors was founded in 1944 and originally produced bicycle parts. Kia is South Korea’s oldest and second largest automobile manufacturer. They forayed into building complete bicycles in 1951, motorcycles in 1957, trucks in 1962 and cars in 1973.

Sino-Korean is the part of the Korean language originally derived from Chinese and it’s from the Sino-Korean terms “ki” and “a” that the name “Kia” was created. The rough translation is “rising out of Asia”.

Kia began a partnership with Ford to produce Mazda brand vehicles for sale in South Korea and surrounding countries. In 1992, Kia finally began its venture into the American market with the creation of Kia Motors America and in 1994 the first Kia brand vehicles were sold from four dealerships in Portland, OR. Over time they slowly expanded their sales region.

Kia suffered a setback in 1997 when the company had to declare bankruptcy during the Asian financial crisis. In 1998 the company was saved from closing by Hyundai purchasing a majority interest, Kia has since been able to regain the majority holding of their company.

There are 13 manufacturing operations in eight countries that produce 1.5 million vehicles a year for distribution in 172 countries.

The United States, specifically the state Georgia, is home to one of only two Kia manufacturing plants outside of Asia. Kia currently produces four different hybrid models, has introduced plans for mass production of an all-electric crossover and has unveiled two other all-electric models.
