The ball joints allow parts to pivot, the bushings attach components to the body, and the arms are links between the ball joints and bushings. Springs are placed between the upper and lower control arms to absorb the force created by the impact of rough surfaces. The shock or strut controls the bounce created by the spring.
Over time, the components will wear and start making annoying sounds. These sounds are usually best heard on rough road surfaces and when making turns.
